Cost and benefit determinants drive all successful business decisions. Conventional terrestrial systems are too costly to attempt ubiquitous service to a developing country. Consequently, services continue to be limited to already over-taxed urban centers and are generally available at costs too high for target resident users. Onward’s stratospheric services  will support delivery of services to the entire footprint of a given country and generally be positioned as the low cost provider.

Africa is increasingly referred to as the “final frontier of global investment.” Nelson Mandela, in a keynote address at World Telecom “95, stated, “eliminating the distinction between information rich and information poor countries is critical to eliminating economic and other inequalities …and improving the quality of life of all humanity.” Our system is the key to eliminating that distinction. Services from Onward  STS will exceed any alternative. A single stratospheric system  can support more than three million simultaneous users. In addition, dynamically steerable antennas can automatically and instantaneously reallocate capacity on demand. For example, commuter routes will receive more capacity during rush hours, business districts during the business day, stadiums during games, etc. Our system will be capable of directing up to 1,000 variable spot beams throughout its services area or footprint.

 

Onward  stratospheric system  users will use standard off-the-shelf user devices. Unlike satellite companies, Onward  will not have to expend resources developing and subsidizing custom user devices. Our system will accept the latest devices from the leading manufacturers around the world. Onward  customers will be able to freely roam everywhere services are offered.
 

Since our customers will use off-the-shelf devices, they will be able to use their devices anywhere services are offered and will not be restricted to areas served by Onward. In addition, users of mobile services from other companies will be able to access services when roaming within Onward service areas.
 

A single stratospheric system builds out an entire service area instantly. There will be no issues with tower placement, dead zones, the environment, or bureaucratic impediments. Our system can exceed 99.99% (four nines), and signal strength will be superior to ground based systems due to better line of sight and fewer obstacles improve signal quality to the user devices.

 

A stratospheric system  will offer more flexibility to operators. it can be configured to support one or more competitors in a given region and replace or complement existing ground infrastructure. When an equipment upgrade is necessary, it can be performed on a single payload during a regular maintenance visit, rather than dealing with hundreds of terrestrial sites.

 

The stratospheric system  will be better positioned to offer advanced services. Incumbent telephone and cable companies are struggling to extend the life of their landline infrastructure with digital subscriber line (DSL) and cable modem services. Eventually, they will reach their capacity. The future of landlines is uncertain, as more and more people are substituting their mobile wireless phones for services once exclusive to landlines.

  • Onward will operate with off-the-shelf mobile service user devices, so they can roam wherever services are offered.

    LOWER COST STRUCTURE

  • One stratospheric system will cost dramatically less than a terrestrial system, which requires hundreds of base stations to service a single urban center.
  • A stratospheric system will operate virtually for free, since solar and fuel cell technology deliver the power required for both station-keeping and signal transmission.
  • Will experience limited wear-and-tear. The systems will operate above 99% of the atmosphere, virtually eliminating weather related airship deterioration.
  • Will allow multiple operators to collocate, reducing costs proportionately.
  • Wwill support more efficient hardware upgrades. Changing out a single payload during maintenance is easier and less costly than managing hundreds of tower sites.
